Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is immersed in the Pacific Ocean and is located off the coast of Chile. Its name is due to the fact that the island was discovered on Easter 1722 Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen.
In the collective imagination is identified with the statues of moai, huge monolithic busts scattered throughout the territory. There are 638 of them. Despite the research carried out in recent years, their purpose is not yet known with certainty. According to some recent studies, the statues would represent indigenous tribal chiefs dead and, according to popular belief, would allow the living to make contact with the world of the dead.

The mystery of the moais
Some statues have on their heads a cylinder (pukao) obtained from a type of reddish-colored tuff, interpreted as a headdress or as the hairstyle once common among males. The moais are between 2.5 and 10 meters tall. There is one, incomplete, 21m high. Those of 10 m weigh between 75 and 86 tons.

A legend of Easter Island tells that birds came from the sky (Tangata manu) that could fly. Their leader was called Makemake and, according to local mythology, he was the creator of humanity, the god of fertility and the main deity of the cult of the bird man. His image was carved on some rocks on the island. Stone colossans moved thanks to a mysterious force that only two priests were able to control. One day, however, the two priests disappeared and from there the work of building the statues was suspended. It is the reason why a host of statues has remained unfinished. Scholars make this coincide with the year 1500.
